DAYTON WINS DOUBLE-OVERTIME THRILLER OVER SJU, 2-1
PHILADELPHIA (10/05/03) – The stakes are a bit higher once the conference season rolls around each fall. And this year, with six teams qualifying for the Atlantic 10 postseason, every game is a must-win. The Saint Joseph's-Dayton men's soccer matchup on Sunday proved just that, as both teams fought for 100 minutes in a physical, foul-plagued contest that included 10 yellow cards and three red cards.
In the end, playing with a man-down for more than 18 minutes proved to be too much for the host Hawks as Dayton's Nate Darr scored the game-winner one minute into the second overtime to give Flyers a 2-1 win. Senior Kevin Dougher was impressive in the net, facing 27 shots and making 13 saves, many of them on point-blank attempts.
Dayton controlled play for the first half of action, out shooting SJU 11-2 in the period. But five minutes into the second half, Dayton's early dominance was an afterthought. Senior Andrew Kulinski sent an indirect kick into a crowd of Crimson and Gray. A streaking Scott Cunningham got a head on it, sending it past Dayton keeper Matt Handy for the first goal of the game.
The assist marked the 19th of Kulinski's storied career on Hawk Hill, moving him within one of the all-time record held by Hawk greats Don D'Ambra and John McIntyre.
The Hawks held the 1-0 lead until late in the second half. With both teams already playing one man down, a red card on SJU's Lateef Turral in the box gave UD a penalty kick opportunity in the 83rd minute.
Dayton's George Nanchoff sent a low-liner to tie the game up at one. After a scoreless first overtime, Darr received a pass from Tye Stebbins and sent it past Dougher for the game-winner.
The Flyers held a 28-9 advantage in shots and a 5-4 lead in corners. SJU committed 20 fouls, while Dayton had 14.
