KULINSKI LEADS HAWKS OVER XAVIER IN A-10 OPENER, 2-0
PHILADELPHIA, PA (10/03/03) Senior Andrew Kulinski (Turnersville, N.J./St. Augustine Prep) had a goal and an assist to lead Saint Joseph's to a 2-0 win over Xavier in the Atlantic 10 men's soccer opener for both teams before a Homecoming crowd at Finnesey Field. The Hawks snap a four-game losing streak and improve to 4-5 (1-0 in A-10), while Xavier falls to 1-8-1 (0-1).
Senior Kevin Dougher (Blue Bell, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) made six saves to notch his second shutout of the season.
Kulinski set up the first goal as he crossed one from the right side to Adam Petitt (Whippany, N.J./Whippany Park H.S.), who headed it in at the left post, in the 17th minute. It was the 18th assist of Kulinski's career, moving him into a tie for second place on the all-time list. The school record is 20 held by John McIntyre and Don D'Amba.
The Hawks struck again just seconds into the second half, when sophomore Matt Filewicz (Philadelphia, Pa./Northeast Catholic H.S.) sent a through ball. Kulinski ran onto it and connected from just inside the box, putting the ball into the upper right of the net at 45:48 for his first goal of the year.
Xavier outshot the Hawks, 15-12, but Saint Joseph's seemed to have the better scoring chances. The Hawks came out aggressively in the first half and had one of its best scoring chances in the 22nd minute, but Adam Duffy's (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown H.S.) shot hit the right post.
Goalkeeper Brian Schaeper made five saves for Xavier.
SJU hosts Dayton in another conference game on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Finnesey Field.
