HAWKS FALL TO VILLANOVA, 2-0, IN MEN'S SOCCER
VILLANOVA, PA (9/30/03) - Senior midfielder Dan Massimini scored two goals to lead Villanova (6-4-1 overall, 1-3-0 Big East) to a victory over the Saint Joseph's Hawks (3-5-0) in a Philadelphia Soccer Seven match. It was the fourth straight win for the Wildcats, as they improve to 6-4-1,while the Hawks dropped their third straight to fall to 3-5.
At the 26:32 mark of the first half, Massimini gave Villanova a lead it would never relinquish. Scott Rodemer won a ball in the box to the right side of Hawks' goalkeeper Kevin Dougher (Blue Bell, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep). Rodemer drew the defense to him and then fed a low cross to Massimini, who collected the ball and fired a low shot into the right side of the net.
The key moment of the second half came when Massimini was pulled down by a Hawk defender inside the box in front of Dougher. His low blast to Dougher's right eluded the goalkeeper on the penalty kick at the 67:54 mark.
Villanova controlled play throughout the game, holding a 7-3 edge in shots.
Dougher made five saves for the Hawks, while Villanova's Pat Walsh stopped three en route to the shutout.
The Hawks return to action on Friday evening, October 3 for the Atlantic 10 opener against Xavier. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at Finnesey Field for the contest which marks the Saint Joseph's soccer “homecoming.
