DREXEL EDGES SJU IN MEN'S SOCCER, 2-1

PHILADELPHIA (09/28/03) – Dominick Balsamo's goal with 6:26 remaining in regulation gave visiting Drexel a 2-1 win over Saint Joseph's in men's soccer action at Finnesey Field. The Dragons improve to 5-4-1 and unbeaten in Philadelphia Soccer Seven action at 3-0-1, while the Hawks fall to 3-4 and 0-1 in league play. Dan Zajac set up the gamewinner by carrying the ball down the right side and sending a cross to Balsamo, who connected on the diving header for his team-high fourth goal of the year. Drexel dominated the second half as the Hawks did not register a shot until the 12-minute mark. At that point, SJU's Andrew Kulinski (Turnersville, N.J.) and Adam Duffy (Downingtown, Pa.) put rapid fire shots on Dragon goalkeeper Jim Greco, but the junior came up with two key saves. The Hawks increased the pressure and added two more shots in the half, but could not capitalize. Drexel jumped on the board first at 33:20 when George Gkionis crossed the ball in front to Justin Sadler, who was 10 yards out. Sadler collected it and then placed it past SJU goalkeeper Kevin Dougher . Saint Joseph's scored the equalizer before halftime when senior Matt James (Skippack, Pa.) connected on a diving header off a cross from Kulinski, which went inside the left post at 40:42. Drexel outshot the Hawks, 11-8, with Greco making six saves. Dougher made three stops for Saint Joseph's. Saint Joseph's returns to action on Wednesday, September 30, when it visits Soccer Seven rival Villanova for a 3:30 p.m. match.
