PHILLYU CRUISES PAST SJU IN MEN'S SOCCER, 5-2
PHILADELPHIA (9/20/03) - Despite a pair of goals by senior Adam Duffy, the Saint Joseph's men's soccer team (3-3) displayed little flair in dropping a 5-2 decision to Soccer Seven rival Philadelphia University (3-2) on the Finnesey Field turf, 5-2.
The Hawks fell behind early in the first half as the Rams erupted for three goals in a 10 minutes span. Sophomore Frederick Douglas scored the first goal of the match in the 11th minute. Three minutes later, PhillyU then made it 2-0 when junior Nolan Dzielak poked home a goal. Senior John Havrilla completed the early outburst with a marker in the 20th minute ot make the score 3-0.
St. Joe's answered Havilla's tally less than a minute later, when Duffy banged home his first goal of the game after a long throw in at the 20:04 mark.
Play leveled out for the remainder of the opening stanza and the game went to halftime 3-1.
Duffy raised the Hawk spirits in the opening moments of the second half. He replicated his first half goal drilling home a long throw in to slice the PhillyU lead to one at 3-2 in the 48 minute.
The Rams, though, answered the challenge, as freshman Franco Ruscetta headed home a through ball by Lou Sigmund just three minutes later to go up 4-2.
The game remained bogged down in the midfield, until SJU got a golden oppotunity with a clean breakaway, but the ball was misplayed and the Hawks were unable to deliver a shot. PU then iced the contest moments later on a tally by junior Paul Ordway.
Philadelphia out shot the Hawks 16-9 and held a 4-3 advantage on cormer kicks. Ram goalie Scott Nixon recorded three save. SJU's Kevin Dougher had three first half saves, but was replaced in the second half by Chris DiStephano, who made two stops.
The contest was originally slated to be played at Philadelphia, but was moved to SJU due to unfit playing conditions related to the recent heavy rains. Although the two squads are Soccer Seven rivals, this was not an official City Series contest for either squad.
SJU now takes a week-long hiatus, returninf to the pitch on Sunday, September 28 against Drexel.
