MEN'S SOCCER DOWNS MANHATTAN IN OPENING ROUND OF HAWK CLASSIC
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (09/06/03) – An own goal put Saint Joseph's (2-1) on the board late in the first half put and the Hawks added two more tallies in the second stanza to register a 3-0 victory over Manhattan (1-1) in the opening round of the Hawk Classic on Finnesey Field. Seniors Adam Petitt, Matt Foster-Moore and Adam Duffy each were credited with goals for SJU.
Pettit picked up SJU's first tally in the 38th minute when his crossing pass was misdirected by a Manhattan defender into the Jasper's own goal. St. Joe's increased the lead to 2-0 less than three minutes into the second half after Foster-Moore blasted home the rebound of his own shot deep in the box. Duffy closed out eh game's scoring by heading home a corner kick by senior Matt James.
SJU outshot Manhattan 18-5 and held a 7-3 edge on corner kicks. MC goalkeeper Collin Leaver registered seven saves, while Hawk netminder senior Kevin Dougher needed to make just three stops.
A foul filled contest, MC committed 30 fouls, while St. Joe's was charged with 25. The Jaspers also had five different players pick up yellow cards in the match. The Hawks had only a single player receive a caution.
