TURNER WINS 100TH MATCH AS HAWKS BEAT VERMONT, 3-2

DURHAM, NH (08/31/03) -- Senior Nick Pittaoulis scored a goal and assisted on another to lead the Saint Joseph's University men's soccer team to Sunday afternoon's 3-2 victory against the University of Vermont in second-day action of the 14th Annual Nike Fall Soccer Classic at the University of New Hampshire's Lewis Field. The win marked the 100th victory in the career of Hawk mentor Tom Turner. The teams traded goals on penalty kicks in the opening minutes of the match. Vermont (0-2-0) took a 1-0 lead at 2:24 when the Hawks were whistled for a foul inside the penalty box and Tony Anderson scored on the ensuing penalty kick. SJU (1-1-0) tied the game, 1-1, 71 seconds later when Pittaoulis converted a penalty kick following a UVM hand-ball violation. Saint Joseph's took a 2-1 lead in the 17th minute when senior Tom Brislin's crossing pass from the right wing was settled by freshman Matt Wurst, who chipped a shot over the charging UVM goalkeeper, David Sullivan. The Hawks took that one-goal lead into halftime and extended the advantage to 3-1 on a set play 61 seconds into the second half. Pittaoulis lofted a high service into the box from midfield that was settled by senior Matt Foster-Moore, whose shot from the right touchline was chipped inside the far post. Vermont pressed in the final 15 minutes of the match and pulled within one goal, 3-2, with 4:10 remaining when Corey Bronner's shot through a crowd from 12 yards found the back of the net. Saint Joseph's kept the Catamounts at bay the remainder of the match to secure the victory. SJU senior goalkeeper Kevin Dougher finished with five saves and UVM's Sullivan also stopped five shots. Both teams had two players named to the All-Tournament Team. Seniors Adam Pettit and Adam Duffy represented Saint Joseph's while Jesse Brady-Searby and Corey Bronner were the Vermont honorees.
