WILDCATS POUNCE ON HAWKS, 5-1, IN SEASON OPENER

DURHAM, NH (08/29/03) -- Five different players netted goals for New Hampshire as Saint Joseph's dropped a 5-1 decision in the opening round of the UNH Nike Fall Soccer Classic on Friday afternoon. The Hawks drop to 0-1 on the season, while the Wildcats improve to 1-0. The Wildcats got on the board just 4:11 into the game when Tyler Jackson scored on a low liner from 25 yards that found the lower left corner of the net. Brendan Hankard would make it 2-0 10 minutes later when he headed a ball home on a corner kick by Jackson. Nicholas Mello made 3-0 at the 24:35 mark when he redirected a throw-in by Bennice. Logan Lee upped the lead to 4-0 5:16 into the second half when he headed home a long, high cross off the foot of Brett Wyman. Senior Adam Duffy got the Hawks on the board when he scored on a feed from freshman Joe Grayauskie 1:37 later, but UNH responded with a goal in the 59th minute by Eric Masi. Senior Kevin Dougher played the first 65 minutes in goal for Saint Joseph's, allowing five goals and making two saves, before giving way to classmate Chris DiStefano. DiStefano stopped two shots. St. Joe's returns to action tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. to face Vermont. The Catamounts lost a 2-0 decision to Iona in Friday's first match.
