PHILADELPHIA - A Butler goal in the 89th minute upset Saint Joseph's as the Hawks fell to the Bulldogs by a final score of 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Finnesey Field. With the loss, Saint Joseph's stands at 5-10-0 overall and 1-5-0 in Atlantic 10 conference action.
Butler (4-6-5 overall, 2-3-1 A-10) got on the board first in the 66th minute as Jeff Adkins found Zach Steinberger, who rocketed the ball into the right upper-90 for a Bulldogs goal.
The Bulldogs would register three more shots, all wide, in the next seven minutes, but it would be the Hawks who would come through in the 78th minute. At 77:15, SJU found itself on the offensive end of a corner kick, taken by junior midfielder Jimmy Reilly. Reilly launched the ball deep into the box and found freshman midfielder Tim Lazorko. Lazorko made a quick step to his left and fired his shot into the lower-left side of the net, past Butler's Jon Dawson, to equal the score, 1-1. The goal marked Lazorko's fifth of the season.
"I was proud of Timmy; he had a nice shot," said head coach Don D'Ambra. "The ball came up and our guys struck the ball really well. It was a difficult shot to hit for him with the volley that he received."
Each team would tally one shot apiece before Adkins came through with the game-winner at the 88:41 mark for the Bulldogs.
For the game, Butler outshot Saint Joseph's 21-17, landing 11 shots on goal as opposed to SJU's eight. The difference came in the second half, as the Bulldogs landed five shots on goal. The Hawks landed just one on Lazorko's equalizer.
Senior goalkeeper Andrew D'Ottavi made nine saves on the day, tying his season-high record in saves.
"I thought our team played a good match," added D'Ambra. "I thought we did a good job defensively. We were committed and organized. Offensively, we needed to be more efficient. We weren't as efffective at executing, particularly in the attacking third . . . To give up a goal in the last minute seems to be our theme when we keep losing these heartbreaking games, but I think that in the future, these games are going to be good for our young guys in terms of experience.
Before the game, the Hawks honored their senior captain, midfielder Tim Brennan, in a Senior Day celebration.
Saint Joseph's will round out its final three games on the road, traveling to La Salle next Friday, October 26, in a match scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
