Hawk Men's Soccer Dropped by Rams, 3-1
Oct. 16, 2007
A quick counterattacking opposition, stiff defense, and a controversial call were the Hawks' poison Tuesday night in a 3-1 loss to Philadelphia University at Finnesey Field. The game winner came from a Devon Klipp penalty kick in the 47th minute on a controversial penalty call. Senior Patrick Duddy scored his second goal in as many games off a Michael McInaw through ball into the left side of the penalty area in the 27th minute. Duddy shot the ball under Philadelphia's Ezra Cassell into the net for the 1-0 lead. Saint Joseph's controlled much of the first half and had solid momentum heading towards the halftime whistle, but bad luck struck the Hawks. A cross by a Ram midfielder into the penalty area was headed into the net by SJU's Alex Koufacos with just over a minute to play in the half. Out of halftime, Philadelphia attacked the Hawk goal. Le'Spencer Walker was passed a through ball into the penalty area as Hawk goalkeeper Bryan Benedict came out to stop him. Benedict knocked the ball away, but also got a piece of Walker, sending him to the ground. The referee awarded Walker a kick from the spot, which Klipp sent home on the right side for the 2-1 lead. SJU had trouble bouncing back from the goal, unable to muster much offense until the 59th minute on a Tom Johnson shot from about 15 yards out required a stellar save by Cassell. The Rams would add an insurance goal in the 82nd minute as Klipp played a long through ball to Rocco Avallone who put the ball away for the final 3-1 score. Saint Joseph's outshot Philadelphia 14-12, while Rams' goalkeeper Cassel made saves in net for Philadelphia. Benedict made one save in the loss. SJU dropped to 2-7-1 and Philadelphia moved to 2-9-2.
The Hawks host two Atlantic 10 games against George Washington on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Richmond at noon. |
