Matt Benedetto and Sean Stewart Named to Men's Rowing Academic All-Area Team

PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's rowers Matt Benedetto and Sean Stewart have been named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Men's Rowing Academic All-Area Team as voted on by the metropolitan area's 28 sports information offices. Both student-athletes are receiving the honor for the second year in a row.

Benedetto, from Newtown Square, Pa. (Malvern Prep), was a three-year member of the Hawks' Lightweight 8 that won three consecutive bronze medals in the Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta, including this season. A team tri-captain, he also helped the Lightweight 8 to a second-place finish at the 2012 SIRA Regatta.

Benedetto maintained a 3.71 grade-point average in accounting and graduated with honors, magna cum laude in May. He earned recognition on the Saint Joseph's Athletic Director's Honor Roll for multiple semesters.

Sean Stewart


Stewart, a native of Havertown, Pa. (Malvern Prep), also rowed for the Lightweight 8 for three consecutive years, earning three bronze medals in the Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta. He was part of the Hawks' silver-medal winning boat at the 2012 SIRA Regatta.

Stewart, who maintained a 3.87 grade-point average in accounting, graduated from the University with highest honors, summa cum laude. He was named to the SJU Athletic Director's Honor Roll for a number of semesters.

To receive the honor of Academic All-Area, an athlete must be in his/her second year at the institution and hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or better.
