Men's Rowing Kicks off Spring Season With Jesuit Invitational
March 21, 2005 CAMDEN, NJ - The Saint Joseph's men's rowing team opened the spring season with solid results at the Jesuit Invitational. The Second Varsity 8 turned in the team's best finish on the Cooper River taking gold in its event. The Second Varsity 8 earned a gold medal, controlling the field the entire 2000m distance from start to finish. The crew won the event in a time of 6:20.1, more than 10 seconds ahead of 2nd place Georgetown. The Varsity 4 delivered a tremendous final 500m to pull through a strong Boston College 4 to take second place with a time of 7:20.8. The V8 rowed a gutsy race. After a 30 minute delay due to breakage in a Boston College 8, the days premier even got underway. Georgetown took a slight lead after the first 500m with th Hawks battling the Hoyas, as well as Holy Cross and BC. At the finish, SJU finished a strong third in a competitive field. Both SJU's Freshman 8 and Second Freshman 8 took silver medals. The First Frosh 8 took it to Georgetown in the first 500m and it separated into a two boat race. Georgetown edged the Hawks at the finish and took first again with the Hawks a close second with a time of 6:39.6. The Light Freshman 8 competing in the Second Second Freshman 8 against three Georgetown boats. SJU separated from the field along with Georgetown's A Boat and took lengths of open water on the B
and C boats. A great finish, the Georgetwon A edged the Hawks, who finished with a time of 6:45, by three seconds.
