Men's Lacrosse Loses to Mount St. Mary's, 9-8, in Double Overtime

Emmitsburg, MD - The Saint Joseph's men's lacrosse team suffered a heartbreaking, 9-8 double overtime loss Wednesday night at the Waldron Family Stadium. The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference defeat brings the Hawks to 4-2 in conference play (4-9 overall) while the Mount improves to 2-3 (2-8 overall), keeping the team's playoff hopes alive.

The Mount opened up the scoring 13:16 into play. The Hawks quickly answered back with a goal by Steve Varga assisted by Steve O'Brien. Mount Saint Mary's added another goal to take the lead, but a goal by Alex McColough from Peter Slowik kicked off a three-goal scoring streak for SJU, making it 4-2 at the end of the first period. Included in the scoring was Varga assisted by Alex Lopes and O'Brien from McColough.

The Mount held the Hawks scoreless in the second quarter as Ben Mundorf went on a three-goal streak of his own with two in the second quarter and the first goal in the third. Sean Cullinan tallied a goal for the Crimson and Gray off a pass from Slowik to tie the score at 5-5 but Mundorf notched one more for the Mount before the end of the quarter.

The fourth period had the teams trading goals, starting with a score by McColough from Zach Charles a minute in. At 8:52 McColough recorded another point for the Hawks, this time from Mike O'Neill to complete the hat trick. With 6:01 remaining in regulation, McColough tied the game for SJU, sending the contest into overtime. Pat Williams assisted on the play, his first of the season.
 

 

After a scoreless first overtime period, Mount St. Mary's won the face-off to open the second overtime and managed to maintain possession until Michael Sciulli fed Joe Bello who shot the game-winner.

SJU scooped up 23 groundballs for the day and completed 20 clears. Hawks' goalkeeper RJ Bopf recorded all 65:35 of the match while tallying eight saves.

The Hawks return to action Saturday, April 21st at Siena. Start time is set for 1:00 pm.
