Men's Lacrosse Drops Conference Opener to Siena, 14-8

PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's men's lacrosse team dropped its conference opener to Siena, 14-8, on Saturday afternoon at a sunny Finnesey Field. Sophomore Matt Dougherty scored two goals for the Hawks.
SJU went on a 6-1 run to come back from Siena's 5-0 lead and tie the game, but after trading goals in the third the Saints took a three-point lead in the frame and didn't look back.
Siena's Bryan Neufeld, who scored four goals for the Saints, put the first goal on the board at the 9:25 mark while Danny Martisen added three goals for a 4-0 lead going into the second quarter.
Neufeld added another goal at the 16-minute mark before SJU's Joey D'Avanzo started the Hawks 6-1 run with 13:37 to play in the frame. Dougherty drilled both of his goals in the quarter, including a man-up goal with 1:25 to go, to put the Hawks within one at the break at 6-5.
Saint Joseph's Sean Evans slung a ball into the cage 4 minutes into the third quarter to knot the game at 6-6. The teams traded goals with an SJU goal by Kevin Wadach before Siena scored four straight goals.
The Saint's three goals in the third and a Neufeld man-up goal in the fourth put the Saints up by four with 12:28 to go. Hawks' Artie Marrapese netted a goal with 8:14 to play but SJU couldn't muster any more offense as the Saints added three more goals for a 14-8 final.
Senior goalkeeper Chase Stewart made his first start in net and tallied five saves for the Hawks.
Saint Joseph's returns to action next Saturday, March 27, when the travel to Marist for a 1:00 p.m. match.
