Men's Lacrosse Downed By Quinnipiac, 12-5
March 10, 2007 Hamden, CT - Saint Joseph's suffered its fourth loss of the season after falling to Quinnipiac, 12-5, Saturday, March 10th. Seniors Steve Varga and Mike O'Neill combined for the goals for the Hawks. Quinnipiac opened up the scoring, netting two goals in the first five minutes of play. Varga cut the lead in half with 7:16 remaining in the first quarter off a pass from O'Neill. The Bobcats quickly responded with two more goals to make the score 4-1. The Hawks cut the lead to two before going into the break as they capitalized on a man-up opportunity. This time is was Varga feeding the ball to O'Neill for the goal with one second remaining. The second stanza opened with Quinnipiac notching another goal. At 6:55 O'Neill again closed the gap with his second goal of the game, off a pass from Alex McColough. The Bobcats answered with a goal of their own with less than a minute left in the half. The score stood 6-3 going into the break. Quinnipiac continued with a streak four goals, holding SJU scoreless through the third quarter and taking a commanding 9-3 lead. After the fourth quarter opened with another Bobcat goal, Varga tallied his second goal of the game, this time from Sean Cullinan, playing a man up. Quinnipiac answered with another goal less than a minute later to make the score 11-4. With 6:19 remaining, Varga sealed the hat trick off a pass from Steve O'Brien. The Bobcats cemented the lead with another goal with little over five minutes left to play. Sophomore goalie Erik Hotaling saw all 60 minutes of action, making 12 saves for the day. The Hawks went 2-6 on extra man opportunities, completed 22 clears and nabbed 21 groundballs in the contest.
The Hawks return to action Tuesday, March 13th as they travel to Villanova to share a cross-town double-header with the women's team. Women's game is set for 4:30 pm to be followed by the men's game at 7:00 pm. |
