Big Second Half Lifts Drexel Over Saint Joseph's

March 3, 2005

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - A five-goal third period by Drexel (2-1) broke open a one-goal game at intermission and lifted the Dragons to a 13-4 victory over Saint Joseph's (1-2) at Franklin Field. Junior attackman Keegan Wilkinson paced SJU with a pair of goals.

An evenly played opening half, Drexel took an early lead scoring 3:23 into the opening period and led at the end of one frame, 1-0. DU made it 2-0 midway through the second quarter on a power-play goal by Jeff Pfeffer, but a Wilkinson goal late in the session timmed it to 2-1 at halftime.

Three straight tallies to open the second half gave Drexel room to breathe, before Wilkinson scored again to make it a 5-2. The Dragons then added six unanswered goals, including a pair on man-up situations, over the next eight minutes to break the game open.

Each team netted a pair of goals over the game's final nine minutes. Freshman Steve Varga and sophomore Alex McColough scored for the Hawks.

DU was particularly good on special teams converting 4-9 extra-man opportunities and also netting a short-handed goal.

Senior Dan Morrissey finished with 10 saves in goal, while his counterpart the Dragon's Bryan Maggio had eight stops.

The Hawks depart for Florida on Sunday and will take on Lehigh in the Sunshine State on Tuesday.
