Men's Lacrosse Loses Home Opener to Drexel, 11-3
March 3, 2007
PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's men's lacrosse team lost its home opener, 11-3, to Drexel on Saturday, March 3rd at Finnesey Field. The Hawks fall to 0-3 after the non-conference match-up while the Dragons move to 2-1. Drexel got on the board quickly, scoring two goals in the first two minutes of play, and took a 3-0 led into the second quarter. The Dragons notched three more scores, two by junior attackman Andrew Chapman, before the Hawks broke through in the final minute of the half. Sophomore attacker Alex Lopes fired one past Drexel goalie Bruce Bickford to put the Hawks on the board before the break. The Dragons opened the third period the same way they opened the first two, putting away three more goals to bring the score to 9-1 before the Hawks added another goal to make it 9-2. Senior Mike O'Neill scored his third goal of the season off a pass from Lopes, with a minute and a half remaining in the third period. SJU's only other goal of the contest came at less than three minutes into the fourth quarter. Coming off a successful clear attempt, O'Neill crossed the ball to Jeffrey Beall, who quickly put it in the back of the net. Despite each team racking up 2:30 minutes of penalty time, neither team was able to capitalize on their man-up advantages. The Hawks got off 21 shots for the game, scooped up 11 groundballs, and completed 23 of 24 clear attempts. Sophomore goalie Erik Hotaling made 11 saves for the day, bringing his total to 43 so far this season.
The Hawks return to action Tuesday, March 6th when they travel to Durham, NC to take on #2 Duke. Game time is set for 3:00 pm. |
