HAWKS TURN IN SOLID EFFORT AT NAVY FALL INVITATIONAL

ANNAPOLIS, MD (09/09/01) - The Saint Joseph's University men's golf team opened the 2001-02 season with a solid outing at the Navy Fall Invitational. SJU placed 15th overall in the 27 team field, just three strokes out of the top 10. Sophomore Brian McDermott led the Hawks with a two-day total of 149 to tie for 34th place in the individual standings. After shooting 307 on the first day, SJU sat in a tie for 17th place with Loyola College. On day two, however, the Hawks improved by 10 strokes, shooting 297 and moving up two places in the final team standings. The squad's two-day total was 607. Supporting McDermott were juniors Paul Polinsky (77, 75 - 152, T-59th) and Jeff Huntzinger (77, 85 - 162, T-127th), as well as senios C.J. O'Connell (78, 76 - 154, T-76th) and J.P. Glynn (76, 74 - 150, T-43rd). Vanderbilt ran away from the field to take the team title. The Commodores final total of 574 was 11 strokes better than the next closest finisher the University of Pennsylvania. The next event for SJU will be the Bucknell Invitational on September 14 and 15 in Lewisburg, Pa.
