Review 2000-01
The Saint Joseph's University golf team turned
in its best season in three years during
2000-01, as a young squad learned on the fly.
The Hawks used three first-year players in
nearly every invitational with juniors J.P. Glynn
and C.J. O'Connell providing the leadership.
Glynn tied for the team lead in the spring with
an average of 77.1 strokes per round and ranked
second on the team in the fall (78.5).
Possessing “big match” capability, he posted
the team's two highest finishes of the season,
placing third overall at the St. Bonaventure Invitational in the fall and
fourth at the William and Mary Golden Horseshoe Invitational in the
spring. He was tabbed as the Atlantic 10 Golfer of the Week for his
performance at the Golden Horseshoe.
O'Connell, meanwhile, was one of just two Hawks to compete in every
match in both the fall and spring. The team captain provided the squad
with a high level of consistency. His top performance came at the
Delaware Bulle Rock Invitational in the fall where he placed 12th overall.
In addition to Glynn and O'Connell, a pair of first-year players, Jeff
Huntzinger and Brian McDermott, also dramatically impacted the team's
fortunes.
The team's most consistent performer throughout the year, McDermott
averaged a team-best 78.2 strokes in the fall and maintained his strong
play in the spring with a 77.8 stroke average. The younger brother of
Mike (‘97) and Kevin (‘99) McDermott, Brian followed in his brothers
footsteps, twice earning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors. His
highest finish of the year came at the George Washington, Swan Pointe
Invitational, where he placed fifth overall.
Huntzinger, a transfer from Rhode Island, tied Glynn for the team lead in
the spring with a stroke average of 77.1. Steadily improving with each
outing, Huntzinger capped the year with a team-best 21st place finish at
the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship.
Sophomores Paul Polinsky and Mike Bosica also played well for SJU
during the season. Polinsky joined the squad for the spring and
averaged 80.6 strokes per round. Bosica, meanwhile played in every fall
tournament, as well as a pair of spring events. Bosica's biggest highlight
came at the Temple Invitational where he dropped a hole-in-one on the
167-yard ninth hole.
As a team, the squad turned in its best finish since 1998, finishing sixth
at the A-10 Championships.
