MCDERMOTT POWERS HAWKS TO ELEVENTH PLACE FINISH AT G.W. SWAN POINT INVITATIONAL

ISSUE, MD (04/02/01) - For the second striaght week, the SJU golf team got off to a strong start at one of the region's most competitive events, the George Washington Swan Point Invitational. The Hawks used a lineup which featured three freshmen and were in sixth place on Day 1, but finished the Invitational in eleventh place overall. Freshman Brian McDermott (73, 80 ­ 153) was the squad's top overall finisher, placing in a tie for fifth place. The other freshman in the rotation were Paul Polinsky (Abington, Pa./Abington), who was making his collegiate debut and Bill Devlin (Warminster, Pa./Archbishop Wood), who was playing in just his second career event. Polinsky (78, 82 ­ 160) was impressive finishing as SJU's third overall finisher and tying for 41st overall. Devlin (95, 90 ­ 185) placed 137th. The young Hawk charges were flanked by juniors J.P. Glynn and C.J. O'Connell. Glynn (83,76 ­ 159) tied for 36th place in the field and O'Connell (82, 86 ­ 168) finished tied for 80th. The 29 team field included five teams from the Atlantic 10, including Dayton, Temple, G.W. and La Salle, in addition to the Hawks. Next weekend, SJU competes at the Navy Invitational on April 7 and 8.
