Hawk Golfers Place Fifth In Weather-shortened Atlantic 10 Championship

NEWPORT, RI - Due to poor playing conditions that included rain and high winds, the Saint Joseph's golf team finished in fifth place at the weather-shortened Atlantic 10 Championship at the par-72 Newport National Golf Club.

The Hawks, who were in fifth after shooting an opening round 308, posted an eight-over-par 152 on the opening nine holes of the second round before the championship was called. Both Saturday and Sunday's rounds were called off as Xavier won the team title with a score of 427, while Saint Joseph's finished 33 strokes behind the Musketeers at 460. George Washington finished in second at 451, while Richmond and Rhode Island tied for third at 453.

Individually, Saint Joseph's junior Billy Stewart finished tied for third with a 27-hole score of 108. Stewart posted an opening-round 71 and 37 over the first nine holes of the second round as Xavier's Jason Kokrak and Neal Grusczynski tied for medalist honors at 106. Stewart tied Xavier's Andy Connell for third, while Rhode Island's Chad Spencer rounded out the top-five with at 109.

For the Hawks, sophomore Chris Reedman posted a 75-40/115, while classmate Ryan McCarty finished at 79-38/117. Junior Sean Seese posted a score of 86-37/123 and freshman Colin Corrigan rounded out the five-man squad with a score of 83-43/126.

With their fifth-place finish, the Hawks concluded its 2005 season, highlighted by winning the Big 5 Classic in the fall.
