Sports Medicine
The Saint Joseph's Sports Medicine Department serves the student-athlete population through the prevention, recognition, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries.
The Sports Medicine Department works closely with team physicians to provide the student-athletes with the best medical care possible. Team orthopedist Michael Ciccotti, M.D. (www.rothmaninstitute.com), Edward Gorrie, M.D. in student health, along with nurse practitioner Laura Hurst, Eugene Hong, M.D., the University's family medicine-sports specialist, and Marc DeoDato, DC (chiropractor) work together to insure that the student-athletes at SJU receive the best possible care.
Weekly visits for Orthopedics occur on Tuesday afternoons, Primary Care Sports Medicine on Thursday mornings and at Student Health with Laura Hurst from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday through Friday. Dr. Gorrie is available Monday, Wednesday and Friday in Student Health located in Souring Hall on the ground floor. Chiropractic care is available Wednesday and Thursday mornings. In addition to physician visits, a physical therapist provided through NovaCare Rehabilitation is on campus Monday, Tuesday and Thursday to treat the entire University community. The Sports Medicine Staff is comprised of five certified athletic trainers. Saint Joseph's University is also a clinical-affiliated site for Neumann University, Central Michigan University, Eastern University, Dublin City University (Ireland) and the Institute of Technology at Carlow (Ireland). Throughout the school year, SJU hosts 5-10 interns from other universities/colleges who, as part of their educational experience, work with Hawk student-athletes.

Lori A. (Sweeney) Rafferty, Ph.D., ATC
Director of Sports Medicine
Lori Rafferty is in her 16th year as SJU's serving 11 years as the Head
Athletic Trainer after serving two years as an assistant on the staff.
As the Director of Sports Medicine, Rafferty coordinates the
medical services for all student-athletes. Prior to joining the
staff at SJU, she worked at Temple University as an administrative
assistant and instructor in anatomy and physiology, worked at Pennsbury
(Pa.) and Montgomery (N.J.) high schools and did a two-year stint at
Rutgers University.
The Bridgewater, N.J., native completed her Ph.D. in Kinesiology from Temple University with a concentration in Sports Medicine in 2000. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education from East Stroudsburg University (1986) and a Master's degree in Physical Education from Trenton State College (1988). Her dissertation focused on the effects of heat and dehydration of delayed onset muscle soreness. She resides in Chesapeake City, Md., with her husband Keith and their daughter Grace.
William C. Lukasiewicz, M.Ed., ATC
Head Athletic Trainer
Bill Lukasiewicz is in his 11th year at Saint Joseph's University
serving as an assistant athletic trainer for nine years prior to
becoming the head athletic trainer in 2006-07. His primary
responsibility is working with the men's basketball team. A 1988
graduate of Springfield College, he earned his master's degree in
kinesiology with a concentration in sports medicine from Temple
University in 1992. Lukasiewicz has served as a certified athletic
trainer at the high school, collegiate and professional levels and he
lives in Havertown, Pa., with his wife Amy and two sons, Cole and Reed.
Beth Howard, M.S., ATC, CSCS, PES
Assistant Athletic Trainer
Beth Howard is in her fifth year at SJU as an assistant athletic trainer subcontracted through NovaCare Rehabilitation. She earned her bachelor's degree from The George Washington University in 2003 and her master's degree from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She worked as an intern for one year on Hawk Hill before becoming the full-time sports medicine representative for NovaCare Rehabilitation. She completed a sports medicine internship with the Washington Mystics of the WNBA prior to joining the staff at NovaCare/SJU. In addition to her duties as the assistant athletic trainer working with women's basketball, Beth also coordinates the rehabilitation services for NovaCare offering physical therapy services on campus to the athletes, general student population, club sports athletes and faculty/staff. The Bethlehem, Pa., native resides in Philadelphia with her husband Ryan Hoagey (SJU '04) and their son Bruno.
Joe Janosky, MS, PT, ATC, CSCS, PES
Assistant Athletic Trainer/Physical Therapist
Joe Janosky joins the sports medicine staff in 2009 serving in a dual role - as a physical therapist contracted through NovaCare and as an athletic trainer for the baseball team. Janosky received his master's degree from California University (Pa.), his physical therapy degree from the University of Scranton and his athletic training education from from Marywood University. He resides in his hometown of Dallas, Pa., with his wife Kim and their three sons, Andrew, Jude, and Michael.
Ryan Obsniuk, ATC
Assistant Athletic Trainer
Ryan Obsniuk returns to Hawk Hill after serving as an athletic training intern in Fall 2007. He completed his undergraduate degree in 2007 from Central Michigan University and is currently working towards a master's degree from SJU. A native of Canton, Mich., he worked at Oakwood Sports Medicine in Dearborn, Mich., serving as an outreach athletic trainer to a local high school. Obsniuk resides in Philadelphia.
