NEWARK, Del. – Four runs in the fifth inning, capped off by
Travis Rinker's three-run double, led the Saint Joseph's baseball team past Delaware, 4-2, at Bob Hannah Stadium on Tuesday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Neither team was able to get on the board in the first three innings, but Delaware (22-17) scratched a run across with two outs in the fourth on a single by John Weglarz.
• Saint Joseph's (22-16) would answer in the top of the fifth.Â
Brett Callahan singled to lead off the inning before stealing second base and then going to third on a wild pitch.Â
Nate Thomas then beat out an infield single to score Callahan and tie the game.
• After a walk to
Andrew Cossetti,
Brendan Hueth singled to load the bases. Two batters later, Rinker ripped a double down the left field line to clear the bases and give the Hawks a 4-1 lead.
• The Blue Hens got one back in the seventh on a home run by J.J. Freeman, but
Sam Davies,
Alec Rodriguez, and
Ryan Devine combined to retire the final eight UD batters of the game.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
•
Patrick Shearer allowed a run on two hits in an inning of relief to earn the win, while Austin Colmery was tagged with all four SJU runs on four hits in two-thirds of an inning to take the loss. Devine struck out two in a perfect ninth for his fourth save of the season.
•
Cole Stetzar did not allow a hit in one shutout inning in his first start since 2019.
• Callahan, Hueth, Rinker, and
Cam Walker each had two hits for the Hawks, while Joey Loynd had a game-high three hits for Delaware.
