Saint Joseph's to Induct Former University President Lannon Into Athletics Hall of Fame at Saturday's Men's Basketball Game
Dec. 9, 2011
PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's University will induct former University President Timothy R. Lannon, S.J., into its Athletics Hall of Fame at the men's basketball game with Creighton on Saturday, December 10 at Hagan Arena. The ceremony will take place at halftime of the contest between the two Jesuit institutions. Tip-off is at noon.
Fr. Lannon served as the 26th president of Saint Joseph's from July 2003 to the end of the 2010-11 academic year, assuming the presidency at Creighton University on July 1.
During his eight-year tenure at Saint Joseph's, Fr. Lannon led many important University initiatives, most notably the agreement to purchase Episcopal Academy's 38-acre Merion campus, now named for alumnus James J. Maguire '58.
Under Fr. Lannon's stewardship, the University vastly upgraded student housing and other facilities on campus as well as Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse, now known as the Michael J. Hagan '85 Arena, and the building of the Ramsay Basketball Center.
He played a significant role in boosting Saint Joseph's academic reputation, while also helping to re-engage the University in its mission, and foster expanded outreach efforts to alumni, governmental leaders, and other external constituencies.
Fr. Lannon will be added to the SJU Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2011, which had eight members inducted on November 5. The group of inductees was comprised of: Steve Ave '89 (men's track), Vicki Boyer '94 (cross country/track), Phil Greipp '64 (men's rowing), Mike Hauer '70 (men's basketball), Dan Kelly '70 (men's basketball), Kevin Kirkby '01 (baseball), Terri Mohr '86 (women's basketball) and Jameer Nelson '04 (men's basketball).
