Athletics Hall of Fame to Induct Seventh Class

PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's University will honor its seventh Athletics Hall of Fame Class at the annual Hall of Fame Gala on Saturday, September 17, 2005 at the Erivan K. Haub Center. The class of 2005 is comprised of Andy Dougherty '48, Katie (Curry) Gardler '93, Pat McFarland '73, Chris O'Brien '92, Cathy (Phillips) Schino '94, and Jack Whitaker '47.

Highlighting this year's class is Hall of Fame broadcaster Jack Whitaker. The Emmy Award-winner established himself as one of the nation's most recognizable television voices in over five decades behind the microphone. He made his mark locally at WCAU, before moving on to national acclaim with both CBS and ABC Sports. During his memorable career he covered such signature events as the Super Bowl, the Summer and Winter Olympics, U.S. Open Tennis, all three legs of horse racing's Triple Crown, and all four of golf's major championships.

The remainder of the six-member Class of 2005 includes Dougherty, the University's long-time sports information director; Gardler, the 1993 Atlantic 10 Most Valuable Player in women's basketball; McFarland, who helped SJU to three straight postseason appearances; O'Brien, a former U.S. national team rower; and Schino, who helped the Hawk softball team to its first-ever postseason appearance.

Andy Dougherty ('48) - Athletic Administration

Served as Saint Joseph's Sports Information Director from 1972-73 to 1982-83... Team manager of Bill Ferguson's Hawk Hoop teams of the mid-1940s...Big 5 historian also served as Director of the Scholastic Score Reporting Service and sportswiter for the Catholic Standard and Times...Long-time secretary of both the Hawk Hoop Club and the William H. Markward Club...Inducted into the Saint Joseph's Men's Basketball Hall of Fame in 1977 and the Philadelphia Big 5 Hall of Fame in 1989...Native of Philadelphia, Pa. (St. Joseph's Prep).

Katie (Curry) Gardler ('93) - Women's Basketball

One of the nation's premier long-range shooters...Three-time All-Atlantic 10 selection, earned Most Valuable Player honors in 1993...Three-time first team All-Big 5 choice, led team to four City Series titles...Topped Hawks in scoring from 1990-91 through 1992-93... Ranks fourth in Hawk history with 1,663 points and second with 325 steals...Helped SJU to 1990 NCAA Tournament...Finished as SJU career leader in three-point field goals made (216) and attempted (621)...Competed in the National Three-Point Shooting contest as a senior...Selected to the U.S. Olympic Festival East team in 1990... Class of 1950 Award winner as top senior athlete at SJU...Inducted into the Saint Joseph's Women's Basketball and Philadelphia Big 5 Halls of Fame in 1999...Married to former SJU men's basketball player Chris Gardler...Native of Philadelphia, Pa. Pat McFarland ('73) - Men's Basketball

High-scoring swingman helped SJU to three postseason appearances (2 NCAA, 1 NIT)... Led Hawks to MAC finals three straight seasons, winning 1971 and 1973 titles...Two-time All-MAC pick...All-Big 5 choice in 1973... Tri-captain of 1973 SJU team...Scored career-high 41 points vs. Fairfield (2/9/72)...Ranked third on SJU career list with 1,545 points and sixth on single season list with 569 points at time of graduation...Averaged 20.0 points and 8.1 rebounds for Hawk freshman team that went 21-2 in 1970... Drafted by NBA's New York Knicks in the 2nd Round and ABA's Denver Nuggets in the 4th Round in 1973...Played three seasons (1974-76) in the ABA with Denver and San Diego... Inducted into the Saint Joseph's Basketball Hall of Fame in 1991 and Philadelphia Big 5 Hall of Fame in 1984...Native of Willingboro, N.J. (John F. Kennedy High School).

Chris O'Brien ('92) - Men's Rowing

U.S. national team member instrumental to the reestablishment of rowing as a varsity sport at SJU... Youngest member of U.S. Lightweight 8 that placed sixth at the 1990 World Championships in Australia...1990 U.S. national champion in Lightweight 8...1989 U.S. club champion with Vesper Boat Club...Also competed at World University Games, U.S. Olympic Festival, and Canadian Henley Regatta...SJU team captain in 1991 and 1992, helped Hawks' Lightweight 8 to 4th place finish at Dad Vail...Class of 1950 Award winner as top senior athlete at SJU...Two-time scholastic national champion (1987-88)...Native of Merion, Pa (St. Joseph's Prep).

Cathy (Phillips) Schino ('94) - Softball

Set over 14 school records on the softball diamond, including season and career marks for hits, at-bats, runs, doubles, triples, RBI, and games played...Guided SJU to four-straight 20+ win seasons, including school-record 31 wins and team's first-ever postseason appearance in 1993...Named first-team All-Region and Academic All-District in 1994...Three-time Academic All-Atlantic 10 selection...Two-year team captain...Named All-Atlantic 10 in 1993...Native of Morrisville, Pa. (Morrisville High School).

Legendary broadcaster established himself as one of the nation's most recognizable television voices in over five decades behind the microphone... Made mark locally in radio and on television as news and sportscaster at WCAU in the 1950s...Emmy Award winner (1977, 1991) spent over two decades with CBS Sports (1961-82), before joining ABC Sports (1982-95)...Covered such signature events as the Super Bowl, the Summer and Winter Olympics, U.S. Open Tennis, all three legs of horse racing's Triple Crown and all four of golf's majors...Inducted into the National Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 1995 and the American Sportscasters Association Hall of Fame in 1997...Native of Philadelphia, Pa (Northeast Catholic High School).
