The Saint Joseph's women's basketball team dropped a hard-fought 65-59 contest to Dayton on Sunday at Hagan Arena as the Flyers used a 9-3 run over the final three minutes to pull away for the win.
With the game tied at 56 all, Dayton's Jenna Burdette struck for six of her game-high 20 points in a 90-second span to give the Flyers a 62-56 edge on a jumpshot with 1:26 to play.
The Hawks (7-8, 2-1 Atlantic 10) answered as a three-pointer by Kristalyn Baisden made it 62-59 with 1:05 to go.
Switching back to defense, Saint Joseph's was able to the Flyers to miss. However, the Hawks couldn't control the rebound, as Dayton regained possesssion and pulled away for good with a pair of Burdette free throws with 25 seconds remaining.
In a back-and-forth contest that had 12 lead changes and eight ties, Saint Joseph's opened up a 49-44 lead early in the fourth quarter on a Baisden three-pointer.
Dayton (10-4, 3-0 A-10) answered back with six points to take a 50-49 advantage and the lead would change hands twice more before a jumper by SJU's Chelsea Woods tied the game at 56-56 with 3:06 to play.
For the game, the Hawks shot 35.4 percent overall (23-of-65), hit 35.3 percent from three-point range (6-of-17) and knocked down 7-of-9 from the foul line.
Individually, Woods posted a team-high 15 points and 11 rebounds for her third-straigth double-double. Classmate Adashia Franklyn posted a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double, while junior Sarah Veilleux added 12 points.
At the other end, Dayton shot 43.3 percent from the floor (26-of-60), hit 4-of-12 from behind the arc and 9-of-11 from the foul line (81.8 percent). Burdette led three Flyers in double figures with 20 points and had a team-best five assists.
The Hawks are back in action on Wednesday when they host Richmond at noon. The game will be televised nationally on the NBC Sports Network.
