NEWPORT NEWS, Va./PHILADELPHIA – Saint Joseph’s freshman pitcher Brian Edgington was named the Atlantic 10 Co-Rookie of the Week by the league office on Monday afternoon, while junior hurler Tim Brennan earned his second consecutive Big 5 Baseball Pitcher of the Week honor.
Edgington tossed three and a third shutout innings on Sunday as the Hawks completed Saturday’s suspended game against Georgetown in the Snowbird Classic in Punta Gorda, Florida. He allowed four hits and notched four strikeouts as SJU came from behind to beat the Hoyas, 4-3.
The Hatboro, Pennsylvania, native shared the honor with Rhode Island’s Josh Brodeur.
Brennan was outstanding on Friday afternoon, pitching into the ninth as the Hawks topped Florida International, 3-2. The Philadelphia native allowed just two runs in the ninth inning and four hits for the afternoon, striking out seven and walking none, to improve to 2-1 on the season. Brennan retired the first seven hitters he faced and then 11 in a row between the fifth and eighth innings.
He shared Big 5 accolades with Mitch Holcomb of Penn.
The Hawks will play a pair of games against Notre Dame on Tuesday and Wednesday before hosting Wagner in their home opener on Friday afternoon.
