BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Graduate student Dan Savage led the Hawks for his fifth race this season to lead the Saint Joseph's men's cross country squad to an 11th-place team finish in a field of 26 squads at the 2017 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship, held at Lehigh University's Goodman Campus on Friday morning. The Hawks put three in the top 60 en route to a 327-point performance.
Princeton and Navy finished first and second to earn the automatic qualification for the NCAA Championship, to be held at Tom Sawyer Park in Louisville, Ky. next Saturday.
In just the second 10k race of his collegiate career, paced by a 5:02.2 mile average, Savage clocked in with a collegiate-best time of 31:16.9, an improvement on his previous 10k PR (31:24), set in 2016, by 7.5 seconds. The tri-captain's performance was good for 39th in a field of 180. Savage hit the 7500m mark at 23:37.5 en route to the SJU's top individual finish.
In his first collegiate 10k race, sophomore Zach Michon averaged a 5:04.4 mile time to finish in 31:30.2 as SJU's #2 runner in 52nd overall, while senior David Dorsey took 57th in his fourth and final NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship in 31:41.4, just over six seconds off from his 10k PR.
Paced by a 5:09.9 mile average, junior Shawn Hutchison went sub-33:00 for 10k for the first time in his collegiate career and edged out La Salle's Ryan James in a collegiate-best 32:04.4 for 84th overall.
Sophomore Josh Clark edged out Bucknell's Brian Dengler in a collegiate-best 32:15.6 for 95th, improving on his rookie-season 10k time (32:48) by over 32 seconds, to round out the scoring for the Crimson and Gray.
In their first collegiate NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship races, junior Jack Daly (32:27.6) and senior Anthony Morelli (33:20.9) crossed in 107th and 146th, respectively, as SJU's #6 and #7 runners. The race marked the first cross country 10ks of both careers, while Morelli has raced the 10k on the track.
The Hawks will conclude the 2017 cross country season at the IC4A Championship, to be held next Saturday, November 18 at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, N.Y. The five-mile race is slated to begin at 10:30 a.m.
