PHILADELPHIA – Saint Joseph's men's head coach and administrator of cross country and track and field Mike Glavin and women's cross country head coach Melody O’Reilly have announced the identical 2018 fall schedules for both the men's and women's cross country squads. SJU will compete in six regular-season meets prior to the start of championship season, which will run from October 27 through November 17.
The Hawks will open up their respective seasons at the Monmouth Kick-Off Invitational (4k/6k) at Thompson Park in Lincroft, N.J. on Saturday, September 1, moving away from a seven-year streak of opening the fall at the TCNJ Blue/Gold Invitational.
Saint Joseph’s will then make its return to the Penn State Spiked Shoe Invitational, to be held at Penn State’s Blue-White Golf Course on Friday, September 7. The women’s 6k will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men’s 5.2-mile run at 6:15 p.m.
The following Friday (Sept. 14), the Hawks will compete at the Main Line Invitational at Haverford College’s Alumni Cross Country Course; the women will open with the three-mile run at 4:30 p.m. while the men will run for four miles starting at 5:30 p.m.
Saint Joseph's will then head to the Paul Short Run (6k/8k) at Lehigh’s Goodman Campus on Saturday, September 29 before splitting up for the first and only time of the fall to close out the regular season on Saturday, October 13; the Crimson and Gray head to both the Princeton Invitational (6k/8k), to be held at Princeton University's West Windsor Fields, and Lafayette Leopard Invitational (6k, 8k), to be held at Lafayette College's Metzgar Fields.
The 2018 A-10 Cross Country Championship returns to Pole Green Park in Mechanicsville, Va. this fall, and the 5k/8k races are set for Saturday, September 27. This will mark the fourth time in the last six seasons that Pole Green Park will serve as the host site of the A-10 meet.
The men's squad took home the silver in a field of 14 at last year's A-10 race, held at the Oatlands Plantation in Leesburg, Va. Saint Joseph’s returns three of its five scorers from that race, including All-Conference selection junior Zach Michon (15th), graduate student Collin Crilly (18th), and senior Shawn Hutchison (20th), while graduating Dan Savage (7th) and David Dorsey (24th).
The men’s program has finished as one of the top-three teams in the Atlantic 10 seven times in the last nine years, which includes a pair of first-place finishes (2009, 2015), a trio of second-place finishes (2012, 2013, 2017), and a pair of third-place finishes (2011, 2014). At Pole Green Park, the Hawks earned silver in 2013, won the title in 2015, and took fifth in 2016.
The women’s squad finished 10th in a field of 14 last fall and returns three of its five scorers in seniors Elaine Estes (40th), Lucy Harmon (52nd), and Lindsey Oremus (55th) while graduating Cassidy Weimer (32nd) and Sydney Coughlin (70th).
In three years under O’Reilly’s direction, the Hawks have turned in a pair of seventh-place finishes at the A-10 meet, with both of those performances coming at Pole Green Park.
The NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship is scheduled for Friday, November 9 at Lehigh University's Goodman Campus. Last season, the men placed 11th overall in the 10k race while the women took 13th in the 6k. The top two teams on each side earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship, which will be held on November 17 at Zimmer Championship Course in Madison, Wisc.
The IC4A and ECAC Championships will be held on November 17 at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, N.Y. The men's squad earned a third-place team to record its fourth top-three finish in the last five years, while the women’s side finished fifth for its third consecutive top-five finish.
