Saint Joseph's rising junior Richard Riva has advanced to the 2018 U.S. Open sectional qualifier after tying for medalist honors this past weekend at the U.S. Open local qualifier at Glenmaura National Golf Club (par 71, 6,854 yards).

Carding a score of one-under-par 70, Riva finished in a three-way tie for first place in the 63-player field to advance to a 36-hole sectional qualifier on June 4. A select few will be invited from there to participate in the 118th U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club from June 11-17.

Playing as a representative of Bent Creek Country Club, Riva prepped for the weekend with a practice round on Tuesday, but had it cut short after 11 holes.

“I was essentially playing the last seven holes blind,” Riva told the Golf Association of Philadelphia. “I got lucky a few times during the [final stretch], but sometimes in golf you need luck to card a good round.”

A two-year letterwinner with the Hawks, Riva averaged 77.89 strokes over nine rounds in 2017-18 and posted a season-best finish at the City 6 Championship, tying for 29th overall.
