PHILADELPHIA - Behind six saves by Saint Joseph's sophomore goalkeeper Megan Bastianelli and the first career goal of freshman Lauren Sawyer, the Hawks' women's soccer team topped Robert Morris, 1-0, at Finnesey Field Friday evening.
The lone goal of the match came early as the Hawks struck in the 17th minute. Taking the ball from her own half, sophomore defender Sarah O'Malley feathered a pass up the right side of the field to a streaking Sawyer. The Hawks' rookie gathered the ball and as Colonials' goalkeeper charged to the right side of the box to challenge, Sawyer dropped a shot to the right corner past RMU's goalie to put SJU up 1-0 at 16:31.
The ball was primarily kept in the middle of the field for the remainder of the first half as the Hawks took a 1-0 edge into the second stanza. Both teams combined for only five shots, with Robert Morris holding a 3-2 advantage.
It was a totally different game in the second half as play opened. The teams combined for 19 shots, with the Colonials out shooting the Hawks 10-9.
Robert Morris had its best opportunity to tie the game in the came in the 54th minute as the Colonials' Kathleen Caggiano drove a hard shot to the upper portion of the goal, only to have Bastianelli get a piece of the ball and deflect it off the crossbar. With the ball bouncing in the box, Saint Joseph's defense came up big blocking a shot by RMU's Daneen Stevenato.
For the game, Robert Morris out shot the Hawks 13-11 and held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Individually, Sawyer earned two points for the game-winning goal, while O'Malley collected a point with her first assist of the year. Improving to 2-1 on the season, Bastianelli made six saves for her second shutout this year.
On the other side, Stevenato and Kelly Hildebrand each tallied three shots in the Colonials' loss. Goalkeeper Jessica Onufer made six stops in a losing effort.
With the win, the Hawks move to 2-1 on the season, while Robert Morris falls to 0-3.
Saint Joseph's returns to action this Sunday, September 9, at Penn. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
