PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team earned their first Atlantic 10 win Friday, defeating La Salle, 14-7, at McCarthy Stadium. The win improves the Hawks' record to 6-6 overall and 1-3 in conference play. Christina Colangelo and Jessica Westlake each had five-point days with Lindsey-Kate McCool right behind with four points.
La Salle got on the board first, with a free-position goal at 29:09 but SJU quickly answered back with a goal by McCool assisted by Colleen Ingelsby. McCool's tally kicked off a nine-goal run, setting the Hawk lead at 9-2 going into the half.
In the second half, the Explorers attempted to stage a comeback scoring five in goals in the top 16 minutes. An unassisted goal by Westlake along with a goal by Ashley Brennan off a pass from Christina Colangelo within that time kept La Salle at bay. Kelly Huether added a tally for the Hawks with the help of Westlake at 16:34 followed by an unassisted goal by McCool and the Hawks' final goal at 14:04 as Jenna Martino converted a pass from Ingelsby. Both teams went scoreless for the remainder of regulation.
Goalkeeper Suzy Herlihy made 8 saves in the contest, playing all 60:00 between the pipes for SJU. Saint Joseph's dominated with 31 shots and 16 draw controls while the teams stood even with 13 groundballs each.
The Hawks return to action Sunday, April 22nd at George Washington. Start time is set for noon.
