PHILADELPHIA (12/01/03) - Saint Joseph's University head baseball coach Jim Ertel has named Mike DeLorenzo and Kevin Sharp to his coaching staff for the 2003-04 season. The Hawks finished with a 17-31 record overall in 2003, 10-14 in the Atlantic 10 Conference. The team faced one of the East's most demanding schedules, which included NCAA regional qualifiers Bethune Cookman, Florida State, Tulane, and Virginia Commonwealth. A 2002 graduate of Saint Joseph's, DeLorenzo completed his collegiate playing career as a fifth-year senior in 2003. One of the team's most vocal leaders as well as one of the Atlantic 10's most capable receivers after transferring to SJU from Rhode Island in 2000, DeLorenzo was a two-time winner of the team's scholar-athlete award. The cerebral backstop earned both Academic All-A-10 and Verizon Academic All-District honors as a senior. A clutch performer, the Fairfield, N.J. native (West Essex H.S.) hit .286 last season with four home runs and 26 RBI. DeLorenzo was honored as the National Hitter of the Week by the NCBWA after cracking walk-off home runs on consecutive days versus Duquesne last season. Sharp, who graduated from Temple in 2001, joins the SJU staff after serving as an assistant coach at his alma mater from 2001-2003. A four-year letterwinner for the Owls, Sharp helped TU to the Atlantic 10 title and a NCAA Regional Tournament appearance as a senior. The native of Levittown, Pa. (Holy Ghost Prep) most recently served as an assistant varsity and head junior varsity coach at Hatboro-Horsham High School in 2003.
