AMHERST, Mass. - Massachusetts' Therese Smith tallied the game's lone goal in overtime as the Minutewomen handed the Saint Joseph's women's soccer team a 1-0 loss Sunday afternoon.
The Hawks (5-10-1, 2-4-1 A-10) and Minutewomen needed extra time after neither team could find the back of the net over the opening 90 minutes. Saint Joseph's sophomore Christine Neal made six saves, three per half, to force the extra frame.
Unfortunately for SJU, the Hawks couldn't connect on their scoring chance in overtime as junior Maggie Lupinski's shot was saved by Massachusetts goalkeeper Emily Cota.
The Minutewomen (7-9-0, 4-3-0 A-10) got the decisive goal after a shot by Jess Howe was deflected off a SJU defender and redirected off the post. The ball bounced toward Massachusetts' Smith, who buried it into the open net at 96:57.
Saint Joseph's returns to action next Friday when the Hawks host Charlotte at 7 p.m.
