DELAND, FLA (2/21/04) - Saint Joseph's (1-4) rallied from 3-0 and 6-3 deficits to defeat 2003 NCAA qualifier Stetson (3-2) 9-8 Saturday afternoon at Melching Field and pick up their first win of the season. Four different Hawks had two hits in the victory. In the bottom of the first, Bill McCollum hit the first two Stetson batters, setting the table for the middle of the order. An RBI double off the left field fence, a run scoring single and a sacrifice fly gave the Hatters a 3-0 lead. The Hawks quickly tied the game in the top of the second scoring three unearned runs. Mike Gentile singled home two runs with two outs and Jake Iampietro followed with an RBI double to left. The game remained tied until the bottom of the fifth when the Hatters scratched across three runs to regain a 6-3 advantage. The Hawks again answered right back as pinch hitter Joe DiNuble singled home two runs to pull SJU within a run at 6-5. The Hatters failed to score in the bottom of the sixth after loading the bases with no one out. The Hawks took advantage, scoring four times in the top of the seventh to take a 9-6 lead. Brian Schappert tripled and scored, McCollum doubled and scored, and Ryan Standanlick and Jason Tarewicz each had run scoring singles. In the bottom of the eighth, a two-run blast to left bt Stetson cut the lead to 9-8. The Hatters then put runners on second and third with one out, but Joe Mucci came out of the bullpen and retired the next two batters to end the scoring threat. Adriano Petrutz (1-0) picked up the victory and Mucci earned the save, while Cameron Abel (0-1) suffered the loss. The Hatters left 12 runners on base. The start time for Sunday's series finale and rubber game has been changed to a 12:05 p.m.
