PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team (4-4, 0-1) fought both the cold and a tough Richmond Spiders (8-4, 2-0) squad in a 9-7 overtime thriller. Jessica Westlake scored her second hat trick of the 2007 season to pace the Hawks' offense.
Richmond came out of the gates strongly, leading 4-2 at halftime. The Spiders' offense was keyed by Mandy Friend, who scored three goals in the first frame. Lindsey-Kate McCool put the Hawks on the board at 16:34 to cut the Spider lead in half. Richmond answered back, adding two more goals to its lead until Westlake notched her first of three goals for the day making the score 4-2 into the break. Christina Colangelo assisted on the play.
In the second half, SJU's Westlake scored two quick goals to get the Hawks back into the game. Saint Joseph's offense came alive in a three-goal, four minute run which saw Colangelo and Jenna Martino each net unassisted goals to put the Hawks on top. Richmond tied it up at 6-6 off a free position goal at 12:04. After Martino's score at the 11:10 mark, the Spiders tightened their defense and held SJU scoreless for the duration of the game. With 2:24 remaining in regulation Richmond's Morgan Vahue notched a goal to send the contest into overtime. Vahue scored the go-ahead goal 11 seconds into the overtime period. Ashley Friend then added another tally to cement the win with :40 second remaining in overtime.
Hawk goalkeeper Suzy Herlihy played all 66 minutes, recording a season-high 15 saves. SJU and Richmond stood even with groundballs at 15 a piece for the day. The Hawks return to action Sunday, April 8th as they travel to St. Bonaventure for their second conference game of the season. Game time is set for 11:00 am.
