Box Score

NORRISTOWN, PA - Juniors Matt Godusky and Adriano Petrutz each homered during a five-run seventh inning that put Saint Joseph's (17-37, 9-16) on top, but Xavier (17-37, 7-18 A-10) rallied to tie the game in the eighth and won it on a sacrifice fly in the ninth, 8-7, in Atlantic 10 baseball action at Latshaw-McCarthy Field.

SJU trailed the game 5-2 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, but SJU flexed its muscles, homering twice and scoring five times to first tie the game and then take the lead. With one out, Chris Cashman reached first when the first baseman misplayed a groundball. Jereme Scott then followed with a single through the leftside. Another XU error by the pitcher on a failed pickouff attempt at second base moved each runner up 90 feet. A pop up made it two outs, but then Petrutz tied the game at 5-5 with a three-run homerun to rightcenter field. Mike Gentile proceeded to follow with a single back up the middle and Godusky homered to leftfield to give SJU the lead.

Leading 7-5, the Hawks handed the ball over to Mark Imbo, but he was unable to hold the advantage. After a single and a fielder's choice, XU's Andy Zellers smacked an RBI double down the leftfield line. A geound ball then advanced Zellers to third and XU tied teh game when Petrutz was unable to pick up a groundball by Matt Waskerwitz.

In the ninth, Adam Pasano led off the inning by being hit by a pitch. Imbo then got a pop out before being replaced by Jeff Williams. He promptly surrendered back-to-back singles to load the bases before a sacrifice fly by Adam Lipski put Xavier on top for good.

The Hawks would put runners at the corners in the ninth, but were unable to push the tying run across.

Neither starter figured in the final decision and errors limited their earned runs allowed. SJU's Jason Hessler tossed 7.0 innings allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits. He stuckout seven and walked a pair. His counterpart, the Musketeers's Mike Creevy also went seven innings, allowing seven unearned runs on nine hits and strikingout six with one walk.

Imbo (3-3) suffered the loss allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits in 1.1 innings. XU's Steve Sakosits (1-2) collected the win with two innings of scoreless, hitless baseball.

Tim Smith finished 3-4 with a run scored for SJU. Petrutz was 1-4 with four RBIs and Godusky finished 2-4 with a couple of RBIs. Xavier's Sean Brewer was 3-5 with one run and two RBIs, while Lipski added a pair of hits.

The two teams will continue their three-game series on Friday at 3:00 PM.
