SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Saint Joseph's women's soccer team got an early goal from freshman forward Mo Hawkins, but couldn't hold off reigning Big West champion UC Santa Barbara as the Hawks fell 5-1 in their season opener Friday.
The Gauchos (3-0-0) opened the scoring in the second minute as Alissa Sanchez streaked down the right side of the field and deposited a shot to the far left post past SJU sophomore goalkeeper Christine Neal at 1:04.
Hawkins answered back for SJU less than six minutes later as the Hawks capitalized in front of the UC Santa Barbara goal. With the ball deep in the zone, junior Maggie Lupinski threaded the needle through Gaucho defenders to Hawkins, who quickly shot the ball to the back of the left side of the net at the 6:40 mark.
The game remained knotted at one until the final 10 minutes of the first half. Unfortunately for Saint Joseph's, UC Santa Barbara scored in the 36th and 41st minutes to take a 3-1 edge into halftime. The Gauchos' Erin Ortega registered both goals as her team outshot SJU 14-3 in the opening stanza.
Erica Shelton made it a 4-1 game in the 51st minute, with Kylie McDonald scoring the game's final goal in the 71st minute.
