PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's senior Lauren Sawyer scored an early goal, while sophomore goalkeeper Christine Neal and the Hawks' defense kept Xavier off the board in a 1-0 victory Friday evening at Finnesey Field.
Coming off a win last Friday at Temple, the Saint Joseph's women's soccer team (5-8-0, 2-2-0 Atlantic 10) looked to post its second-straight Atlantic 10 win. Sawyer pointed the Hawks in the right direction in the 18th minute. Controlling a ball in the Xavier end, Sawyer dribbled towards the opposing goal, cutting to the right side of the box. Passing a Musketeer defender, Sawyer drilled a shot to the lower left of the net, past the XU goalkeeper and into the back of the netting at 17:51.
Xavier (6-8-0, 2-3-0 A-10) registered just one shot in the first half and was continually thwarted by the Hawks' defense deep into the second half.
With less than a minute to play, Xavier moved the ball into the SJU zone, earning a throw in down the right wing. Off the Musketeer throw, Saint Joseph's freshman Lindsey King split a pair of Xavier players to get to the loose ball, and drilled the ball deep into the Xavier corner in the final seconds to preserve the Hawks' victory.
For the game, SJU outshot Xavier 12-3 and held a 6-4 edge in corners.
In net, Neal made three saves for the shutout victory.
