PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's freshman midfielder Carly Salter tallied her first career goal and sophomore goalkeeper Megan Bastianelli made four saves for her first career shutout as the Hawks' women's soccer team topped Drexel, 1-0, in its season opener Friday night.

Playing in front of an enthusiastic crowd at Finnesey Field, both squads had a slow start to the contest. Drexel, who came into tonight's match 0-3 all-time versus Saint Joseph's, was the aggressor in the first half, out shooting the Hawks 3-1.

In a chippier second half that saw the teams combine for 19 fouls, the Hawks gained momentum early on. Saint Joseph's got the ball deep into the Dragons' zone in the 51st minute, leading to a corner kick for the Hawks. From the corner, the ball deflected off Drexel's goalkeeper Kaitlin Bond and several players, causing it to bounce towards the middle of the goalkeeper's box. With the ball still unsettled, Salter booted a shot to the middle of the net to put the Hawks up 1-0 at 50:39.

Leading 1-0, the Hawks had two solid opportunities to widen their gap, but to no avail. In the 60th minute, freshman Raeann Groves' shot was saved by Bond, while a classmate Lauren Sawyer missed a one-on-one opportunity wide right from 15 yards out.

After nearly 18 minutes of back-and-forth action, Drexel made a strong effort to tie the game in the 79th minute. Bastianelli made a save on the Dragons' Christina Murta at 78:18, while the defense made the biggest save of the game less than two minutes later, deflecting a shot by Drexel's Michelle Donnelly after Bastianelli had slipped trying pick up a DU crossing pass.

Drexel kept pressing over the final 10 minutes, but failed to register a shot as the Hawks held on for the victory.

For the game, Drexel out shot Saint Joseph's 6-5, while the Hawks held a 4-2 edge in corner kick.

Individually, Salter's lone goal was the only point in the game, while SJU senior co-captain Shannon Osborn posted a team-best two shots. Bastianelli made a game-high four saves over 90 minutes to earn the win.

On the other side, Carly Snyder posted a team-high two shots for Drexel, while Bond made two saves in the loss.

With the win, the Hawks move to 1-0 on the season, while the Dragons fall to 0-1.

Saint Joseph's returns to action this Sunday, September 2, at Delaware. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
