NORRISTOWN, PA - A masterful performance on the mound by Rhode Island's James Norcott held the Saint Joseph's baseball team to two hits on Friday afternoon as the Rams secured a 6-2 victory in Atlantic 10 baseball action. Norcott worked eight strong innings to earn the victory, improving to 5-7.
Rhode Island (21-28, 15-11 Atlantic 10) drew first blood in the top of the second inning, scoring five runs on four singles and two walks. The Hawks got two runs in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single by freshman Mike Boyland. Freshman Matt Barnathan and junior Mike Blahusch scored on the play.
The Rams added another run in the ninth on an RBI double by Eric Larson.
Saint Joseph's (10-38, 6-20 Atlantic 10) freshman Pat Monaghan struggled early, surrendering five runs on eight hits in four-plus innings. Righthander Mark Dolaghan entered in the fifth inning and scattered five hits over four innings and was charged with one run. Monaghan took the loss to fall to 1-5 on the season.
The series and season finale will take place on Saturday afternoon at noon. The Hawks will celebrate Senior Day, honoring their five senior players before the game. Streaming audio will be available at www.sjuhawks.com.
