PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's junior Kyle Mullen was named the Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday morning. The righthander tossed seven and a third innings of three-hit ball in Friday's win over Iona in the first game played at SJU's new baseball facility.
It is the third career Big 5 weekly honor for Mullen and his first this season.
Mullen got the historic start for the Hawks, taking the mound in the inaugural game at the new ballpark on the Maguire Campus, and did not disappoint, working into the eighth inning as SJU defeated Iona, 5-1. After allowing a run in the first inning, Mullen settled in and retired 17 of the next 20 batters he faced.
The Berwyn, Pennsylvania native allowed one run on three hits, just one of them after the first inning, while striking out seven. The outing comes on the heels of his complete-game performance at the University of Washington the week before.
Villanova's Matt Fleishman was named the Big 5 Player of the Week in voting conducted among the head coaches and sports information directors of the region's five Division I baseball programs. Mullen and the Hawks will host the Wildcats on Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
