NORRISTOWN, PA (3/30/04) - Lehigh (13-10) rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth inning to defeat Saint Joseph's (4-24) in the opening round of the Liberty Bell Baseball Classic at Elmwood Park's Latshaw-McCarthy Field, 5-3. The defeat spoiled a strong effort by Hawk senior Bill McCollum, who pitched into the ninth but came away with a no decision. SJU led 3-2 entering the ninth, but LU's Forrest Doane opened the inning with a double off McCollum. McCollum was then replaced by Joe Mucci who got a strikeout and a lineout from the next two batters. With two down, Mucci coaxed a groundball to short, but the ball was bobbled and then thrown off line for an error that kept the inning alive. Pinch hitter Dave Moscow was then walked to load the bases after taking a 2-2 pitch that appeared to be strike three. Eric Hoffman then delivered the decisive blow a three-run double to leftfield. SJU could not muster a rally in the ninth. The Hawks had staked themselves an early lead by scoring twice in the bottom of the first. Jason Volker doubled home Kevin Walsh and Ryan Stadanlick. Lehigh scratched back sandwiching sigle runs in the second and fifth around a Hawk run in the fourth to make it a 3-2 ball game. McCollum turned in his best outing of the year, going 8.0 innings, allowing five hits and striking out five. Mucci (0-5) took the though luck loss, as all three runs in the inning were unearned. Ryan Dodds was equally effective for Lehigh tossing 7.0 inning and giving up eight hits with six strikeouts. Kyle Stawicki (2-0) gave up one hit over the final two innings and picked up the win in relief. Volker was 2-4 with two RBI for SJU and Jason Tarewicz also had two hits. Hoffman had the key three RBI double for the Mountain Hawks. SJU is slated to return to the diamond on Wednesday at Pennsylvania.
