JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - Kevin Taylor had two hits for the Hawks but SJU's comeback eventually fell short as East Tennessee State held on for a 3-2 win on Saturday afternoon at Thomas Stadium.
East Tennessee State (4-1) took an early lead, scoring two in the first on a triple by Kerry Doane and a sacrifice fly by Clinton Freeman.
The Bucs added one in the second on a home run by Derek Niesman.
The Hawks had a chance to tie the game in the ninth inning as Craig reached third base with two outs, but Doane, who had moved from shortstop to the mound, induced a groundout to earn the save.
Derek Bushey earned the win for the Bucs, his first of the season, while Alex Pracher fell to 0-2 for Saint Joseph's. Doane earned his first save of the year.
The teams will wrap up the series on Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
