(2/14/04) - Virginia Commonwealth pitchers Justin Orenduff and Jon Link each produced a one-hitter to help the Rams sweep Saint Joseph's in the season opener for both teams, winning 7-2 and 7-0. In game one, Orenduff (1-0) retired 16 Hawk batters before giving up his only hit. Orenduff pitched a full seven innings, striking out eight Hawks. VCU came up big in the third inning when leadoff hitter Eric Latura singled past the shortstop. SJU's Al Braun walked Paul Swack and then Anthony Granato singled to left field, allowing both Latura and Swack to score and take a 3-0 lead. Kyle Atrat singled and Jeff Parrish hit a double sending Atrat across the plate. The Rams scored again in the fourth and the then the eighth to take the 7-0 lead. The Hawks scored two runs in the ninth inning to provide the final margin. In game two, Link (1-0) pitched his first complete game with the Rams. The sophomore starter recorded his first one-hitter, walked one Hawk and struck out 10 SJU batters. Link retired 11 SJU batters before giving up the only hit of the game. The Rams scored three in the second inning and then added four more runs over the next two. The Hawks were unable to score in game two of the doubleheader. The Rams collected three earned runs from pitcher Bill McCollum, who pitched 3.1 innings, giving up five hits and all seven runs. Adriano Petrutz completed the game (2.2 innings), allowing only two hits and striking out three Ram batters. The teams will meet again on Sunday, Feb. 15 in a single game beginning at 1 p.m.
