The Saint Joseph's women's Lacrosse team defeated Long Island, 19-4, Friday night at Finnesey Field. Christina Colangelo and Lindsey-Kate McCool each scored hat tricks while six other Hawks added two goals apiece.
SJU got on the board quickly with a goal by Jessica Westlake less than a minute into play. The Hawks unleashed a barrage of shots on the LIU goal scoring five times in the first eight minute to take a commanding 5-0 lead. Saint Joseph's doubled its lead going up 10-0 with 3:49 to go on McCool's third goal of the game.
The Blackbirds were able to notch two goals before the half, but in the second stanza, SJU scored four straight times in the first 8:09 to put the game far out of reach at 14-2. LIU attempted to battle back, tallying two more goals in the second half, but they were unable to get enough momentum going to stop Saint Joseph's.
In addition to Colangelo and McCool's tallies, Jenna Martino and Westlake each added two goals and two assists. Kristina Jaggers notched two goals and an assist. Karen Wiley, Abby Renninger and Ashley Brennan each recorded two goals as well. Helene Tursi had two assists. Freshman Kelly Huether's goal with 2:53 closed out the scoring and set the final at 19-4.
The Hawks recorded 29 shots for the day and out-grabbed the Blackbirds 17-5 in groundballs. Each goalkeeper registered six saves on the day.
Saint Joseph's returns to action Tuesday, April 3rd in its fifth home game of the season when they take on Rutgers. Game time is set for 5:00 pm.
