PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team (7-9; 2-5 A10) defeated Temple (6-10; 4-3 A10), 11-8, in an action-packed thriller, Sunday on Finnesey Field. Before the game, Hawk seniors Megan O'Donnell, Katelyn Kinney, Jen Fletcher, Suzanne Finley, Kristina Jaggers, Sarah Magan, and manager Danielle Tanguay were honored for their four years of dedication and hard work.
St. Joe's began the first half on a goal by Jenna Martino at 21:27. Temple's two goals from Allison Frengs and Johna Capaldo gave the Owls the lead. After an eleven minute scoring draught, Christina Colangelo notched her first of two goals on the day. Colangelo's goal kick started a flurry of activity, which saw the Hawks regain the lead with the help of two more goals from Martino. Temple sophomore Brittney Hoffman's lone goal just beat the halftime buzzer, bringing Temple to within one goal of the Hawks' 5-4 lead.
Saint Joseph's began the second half with an incredible six-goal run that stretched their lead to 11-4 with 12:27 remaining. The run included two goals apiece from Martino and Lindsey-Kate McCool. Temple came roaring back with four goals in the last nine minutes, closing the deficit to 11-8. Stellar goaltending from Suzy Herlihy capped the late charge from Temple's Frengs, who had three of the Owl's last four goals. The Hawk defense stayed strong and was able to hold the lead in the last minutes of play for the win.
Martino finished her breakout freshman campaign with a game-high five points. Jessica Westlake and Suzanne Finely also scored two key insurance goals. Jessica Fletcher led both teams with five recovered groundballs. The game was the regular season finale for both teams, including Temple who clinched a playoff berth for the Atlantic 10 Championships last Friday against La Salle.
