PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's baseball team lost its season-opener this afternoon, dropping a 3-1 decision to Norfolk State in Norfolk, VA. The Spartans used a two-run eighth inning to slip past SJU. NSU's Joey Seal earned the win, while senior Jeff Williams took the loss for the Hawks.

Saint Joseph's took an early 1-0 lead on junior shortstop Chris Cashman's fourth-inning single. That hit drove in junior rightfielder Jeremy Jakubowski, who singled and stole second base with two outs in the inning. Both Cashman and Jakubowski finished 2-for-4 for the afternoon. Norfolk State tied the game in the bottom half of the frame on a sacrifice fly by third baseman Anselmo Cantu.

In the bottom of the eighth, Williams walked first baseman Ernie Banks with one out to set up a first-and-second situation. The Hawks failed to turn a double play on a grounder to Cashman at short, leaving runners at the corners. A wild pitch forced in the winning run, and the Spartans added insurance with a Rocco Savage RBI double.

The Hawks will look to even the series tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
