PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's junior baseball players Greg Kumpel and Eddie Palmer were among the honorees tabbed by the league's coaches in the 2012 CollegeBaseballInsider.com Atlantic 10 Preview. Kumpel was listed as one of the league's best hitters and power threats while Palmer was feted as the best defensive catcher in the conference.
Kumpel led the Hawks in nearly every major offensive category last season, enjoying a breakout campaign in which he hit .384 and was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference Second Team and the Philadelphia All-Big 5 Baseball Team. The outfielder was one of five players considered the league's "best pure hitters." Kumpel was also noted as one of the A-10's "biggest power threats."
Palmer took over the everyday catching duties early in the season and blossomed into the league's best defensive backstop. He also was tabbed as one of two catchers with the best arms.
Kumpel, Palmer, and the rest of the Hawks will kick off the 2012 season on February 17 with a game against Bryant at the USA Baseball Complex in Cary, North Carolina. SJU opens its new home field on March 9 against Iona.
