Staten Island, NY - The Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team won its season opener on Saturday afternoon, notching a 12-6 victory over the Wagner Seahawks in Staten Island, NY. Leading the Hawks were sophomore midfielder Christina Colangelo and freshman attacker Jenna Martino, combining for nine of the 12 SJU tallies. Sophomore Suzanne Herlihy recorded the win between the pipes.

The Hawks (1-0) took an early lead when Colangelo scored her first of the game with 27:31 to go in the first half. After a Wagner equalizer, Martino found the back of the net to put the Hawks ahead for good. Junior Lindsey-Kate McCool gave the Hawks a two-goal cushion midway through the stanza before Colangelo, sophomore Jessica Westlake, and Martino scored in succession to give the Hawks a 6-1 lead at halftime.

At the start of the second half, Colangelo and Martino scored in the span of 27 seconds to put the Hawks up 8-1. The Seahawks (0-2) then rallied back with four consecutive goals to close the gap to three with 12:48 remaining in the game. However, Colangelo scored on a free position shot at the 10:42 mark to stop the run. Martino added her fourth goal of the game, followed by senior attacker Kristina Jaggers netting her first goal of the season to effectively put the game away with under seven minutes left. A free position goal by Wagner and Colangelo's fifth score of the game, with four ticks left on the clock, rounded out the scoring.

For the game, Saint Joseph's fired 28 shots, landing 24 of them on net. Herlihy recorded four saves for the Hawks to earn the win. Colangelo paced all scorers with her five goals, while Wagner's Cara Gonzalez added a hat trick to pace the Seahawks. McCool added two assists along with her goal to tally three points.

The Hawks return to Finnesey Field for their home opener on Sunday, March 11th when they take on the crosstown-rival Drexel Dragons. The game is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
